Fantastic Beast's

Hey Bloggers!

Today for the third day of the summer learning journey the first task was to make your own fantastic beast just like the harry potter movie.
When I saw this task I got so excited because I loved the first fantastic beast's movie and I can't wait to watch the second one.

The first thing that I did was brain storm ideas of what to make so here is my brain storm:
  • A shark bird that breathes fire
  • A giraffe and a zebra that can ice skate and have lazer eyes
  • a fish horse that chew through anything and swim in the sea

But then I came up with this and it is my finished product.

Thank you for reading please comment feedback on what I can improve on next time.

The Cactus

Hey Bloggers!

Today for my next blog post of the summer learning journey I will be doing a maths blog post.
For this we got given the task of reading about the cactus and then finding out that the cactus only needs 3mls of water per day.
So once we found that out we had to do a blog post teaching other people have to work out how much water a cactus would need for a whole year if you just gave it 3mls a day.

So here is my DLO on how to figure out this math equation.

I hope you learned something new today
Thankyou for reading my blog please comment what I can improve on next time.

Tāne Mahuta

Hey bloggers!

It is time for day two of my summer learning journey and today the first activity is to write a blog post about Tāne Mahuta which the NZ kauri tree and this tree is only in New Zealand which means that no where else in the world has the pleasure of having this beautiful tree.

Now for this blog post they gave us the task of answering if we would ever like to go and visit this tree in real life.

Now me personally I would love to go and visit this amazing tree. Because I feel like this would be a great opportunity to see more of the amazing wonders of New Zealand. Also because it would be great to see more amazing things in this world before they could possibly become extinct or other countries start to produce them and then it isn't just special to NZ.

So that is my opinion on if i would like to go and visit these trees. Would you like to go and visit these trees?

Thank you for reading and please leave feedback in the comments on what I can improve on.

Christchurch City

Hey bloggers!

Today for the summer learning journey my second task was to right about my hometown.
My hometown is christchurch city.

Christchurch is one of the three biggest citys in New Zealand along sidee Wellington and with Auckland being the biggest.

I am so happy to call christchurch my home because there are so many different and cool things to do here. We also have so many great playgrounds, beaches and a great museum with many different historic things in it.

Our Great NZ

Hey bloggers!

This week is the start of the summer learning journey. The summer learnng journey is a programme that helps you to keep up your learning over the holdays. If you are interested about the summer learning journey and want to know more than please go to their website.

Each week we have a new subject that we have to do different activites about. Today the first activity was about "the legend of New Zealand" and then we had to write a blog post about our top three fun facts.

These were my top three fun facts:

1. it was the first major nation to allow woman to vote legally.

2. Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sunrise because it is 496.3 kilometre from the international date line.

3.The largest city in New Zealand is Auckland although Wellington is the capital.

Paddle Boarding

Yesterday the year 8's from Rimu class went paddle boarding at lake rua for the day.
when I was getting ready for the day I was a bit nervous for how it was going to go but then I ended up finding it really easy.

At paddle boarding we went into two groups, my group firstly went on the single paddle boards and had a turn on those and then we went on the big one all together and we did really well on that as a group especially when me and my friend Ariana were leading the group. Until...

My friend "accidentally" pushed me off her is a photo of that. that is me right in the corner next to the stick.
here is some more photos of the day.

Summer Learning Journey Prep #1

Today for the summer learning journey prep we got the tak to look at countries and then choose one to write a blog post about. There were ten countries to choose from and I decided to choose Japan.

I decided to choose japan because I saw that there was lots of cool facts and it seem like a really interesting country.

Japan is a really large country and has a population of 127.1 million people that is almost 26.5 times the population of NZ that is crazy. Japan has lots of people but still doesn't have that much land. and because of this they are currently in a housing crisis. they are finding that each year at least 10 more percent of people are having to live on the streets and don't have anywhere to go.
(source for this photo link)

The capital of japan is Tokyo. Tokyo is the biggest country in japan with a population of 9.273 million which is almost two times NZs whole population and that is just one place in japan.

Japan is a country made up of 6852 islands that is CRAZY! The four largest islands are:
Honshu,
Hokkaido,
Kyushu,
Shikoku

The most common spoken language is Japanese and japan only has one main language.
japan has an average climate of cold temperatures mostly.

In japan they have 16 national holidays, that is a lot I wish NZ had that many.

Pet Day!

Today is Friday 30th of november pet day at Yaldhurst Model School. I always love pet day because we get to do things like:

  • agro sports
  • sand saucers
  • veggie sculptures
  • animal judging
  • cute animals (except chickens in my opinion)
  • home baking
This year because I am not bringing an animal I get to help with the judging of the animals.
For the sand saucer or veggie sculptures (because you only get to choose one) I decided to make a sand saucer. If you don't know what a sand saucer is it is a plate with sand on it and then you decorate it with flowers and stones and things from the garden. For my sand saucer I decided to get a bunch of flowers from my garden that we grew at home and put those in a really pretty pattern. these are the plants I used in order from the middle to the outside.
  • dendrobium (purple)
  • dendrobium (red)
  • yellow roses
  • rosemary and hoster flowers
  • hoster leaves
and here is a photo
This is when a guy came in to show how a sheep gets shared
This was a really cool performance that we saw when a dog herded some ducks
These are just some photos of the day.

Astronaut

Hi bloggers,
each year at yaldhurst we have an end of year performance, for rimus end of year performance (i'm not saying what it is) we had to create an astronaut, robot or a martian.

I decided to do a astronaut. For my astronaut I decided to trace another picture on google drawing and then I changed it a little bit so that it is my own.

Here is how I did it step by step:
1. I found a picture to trace (here is my picture down below)

2. I zoomed into a certain spot using this magnifying tool.

3.  I then used the curve drawing tool and used that to go around most of the lines.

4. Once I had done that i went in and added all of the little lines to make it look real.
5. I added little details and designs that I wanted to make it look better.
6. I added by face to the mask piece and then you are done.

Once you have done all those step you can then add colours as you wish.

My book

So for hooked on books week this week we had a whole bunch of activities to do and one of the activities is to make a book where you are the star so I decide dto to a story which is a mix of little red riding hood and the three little pigs.

Once had finished I went and showed my teacher and she suggested that I could read the story to a younger class in the school.
So when she said this i thought it was such a great idea. But then I also thought that I could insert the video of me reading it onto my blog for a blog post so I will update later and put a video on to this post.

Hooked on books week

this week for week 6 we are having hooked on books week.
hooked on books week is when each day instead of class reading we read a different book every single day.

Day 1: on monday (day 1) we had a book called liar. now i'm not gonna lie when i first saw the book i said to myself "this book looks so dumb ughhh" but then when we actually started reading it i didn't want the teachers to stop reading it. The start of the book just really hooks you in.
the first part of the book goes straight into jarli and his dad in a car crash except this car crash isn't an accident an old man is deliberately trying to kill them.

Day 2: on tuesday i'm not exactly sure what happened in the book because I wasn't at school. but I am pretty sure that the book was a whole lot of different little stories and they were all funny stories but that is all i know.

Day 3: today on wednesday we had a book called goldfish boy. and so far we are not quite sure what happens at the end but so far all we know is that a boy called matthew and he has major ocd and he is a germaphobe. but so far the big changes is the next door neighbours grandkids, the older sister has pushed her toddler brother into the pond.

Tomorrow we have book character day and i will update my blog with photos from the next two days.
but here are some photos from monday tuesday and wednesday.

Athletic Zones

On Monday 12th of november the qualifying people for zones at yaldhurst went to compete with the rest of the selwyn district schools.

I was in for:
100m sprints
long jump
discuss

There were quite a lot of us from yaldhurst going to zones. Me and my friend Ariana were the only year 8's going to zones.

when the bus got to school we all hopped on and we were all really excited.
Me and Ariana were really nervous but also super excited.
when we got there we saw all of the other schools had found there spots and set up their shade sales and poles saying what the name is of their school.

My first event was at 11 but they were running really behind so by the time I actully did my race it was already at least 11:30 I came last in that race.
then once I had done that i had long jump at 12:30 but it was more like 1 and I jumped 3.43 which i am really proud of.
after that I almost missed my discuss but I didn't. for my discuss I ended up throwing 19.7m with a 1kg disc.
overall i was really proud of myself for how well i did.

I hope you guys enjoyed my blog thank you for reading.

Novel study

Novel study

This term in rimu we have started to do a novel study.
Each reading group has a different book to read for
their novel study.
For my group the book is; Enemy At The Gate By Philippa
Werry.
Now when we read this book we have a set task of things
that we have to do throughout
the book before we read the boom and after we read the book.
One of the activities in the slides is to do an about the author
study and find out as much
information as we could and then we had t present it in a cool
way.
I decided to present mine in a prezi.
Now for my author i couldn't find out much about her so I
actually ended up emailing her
and doing a questionnaire and she answered them all for me.

And here is the link to it. link

Sailing

On Friday the 2 of november rimu class went sailing at lake rua.
We were all loading onto the bus at around about 9:15 in the morning. There was about 35 of us
because some of the class was away. In the bus there was still a lot of spare seats we got quite a
big bus. But I guess they got a big bus just incase the whole class was there.
When we got into the bus I looked at the seats and I thought wow they look scodey. I sat down near
the back of the bus with my bestest friend Ariana. “My bag” Ariana had forgot her bag of towels in the
classroom. She pushed down the aisle against everyone trying to get into the bus as she was trying
to get out. But eventually she got out of the bus and ran back to the classroom then back to the bus
with her bag of towels.

“Got everything now Ariana” I said “yep” she said back. “
“Ready to go now everyone” Mrs Taylor said “yesss” everyone sighed back.

In the stinking hot bus there were kids yelling, singing, talking, moaning (about how hot it was).
The bus trip was a short drive because it was only about ten minutes away. The lake is roughly in
between the airport and orana park if you know where those places are.

Once we got there we all piled outed of the bus looking around to see what the place was
like and where we were going to be going on boats. “What this is way smaller than what i
thought it was going to” “look at how tiny the boats are” I heard people complaining about.

Now you see I already knew what I was getting into because last year I did this with my class as
well. Me and my best friend (Ariana) stood there (to be honest a little disappointed I remembered it
differently) looking at the water. “This way guys lets go” I heard my teacher say.

“A dead fish” I heard one of the kids yell. There was a dead fish; lying on the ground eyes
looking up not floundering or moving about, it was definitely dead.

“Hey guys” one of the instructors said to the group. “Hiiiii” the group said in a sigh as if we all
didn’t want to be there or we were tired.

Next I sat down and the instructors introduced themselves. After we had done that one of the
instructors taught us how to rig a boat. To be honest I didn’t want to do this I just wanted the instructors
to do it for me. Me and my friend Ariana were the first ones done to rig our boats. Then we got
out boats all checked off and went to go sit back down with the group.

After we are done that instructors taught us how to sit on the boat and how to move from side to side.
Once we had done that we went to the other side of lake.

We then had one turn each but after that it was time to have morning tea so we walked back
to the other side of the lake and sat down on the tarpolines because the grass was a bit wet and had
morning tea and a drink of water. We had to remember to keep hydrated because we were doing so
many activities.

After we had eaten morning tea we went back to the other side of the lake. And for the rest
of the day we just had turns going on a lake and having fun.

I went on the first time I went on I was not very good but the second time I got better and I really
started to enjoy it. So because I was enjoying it so much I keep going on and having lots and lots
of  turns.

When the day was over we got changed into our clothes and we got into the bus to leave. But when
we got into the bus to leave they couldn't get the gate open they couldn't find the key to undo the
padlock so we had to wait on the bus for almost 20 minutes for someone to come and cut the padlock.
The owner ended up coming and cutting the padlock open with a grinder.

Then we went back to school and went home.

Bye bloggers!

Uru Manuka Cultural Festival

On Wednesday night Yaldhurst Model School kapa haka group took part in a kapa haka festival.

our kapa haka group was the only one with year 1 - 8 students in it every other group was from year 3 and up to year 8. when we got there it started to feel very real and i started to get really nervous about going on stage and performing in front of lots of people.

In the group I got to lead the whole entire performance and I got to wear a korowai because I was the leader of the group.

Once I got on stage the nerves started to go away and I started to feel really excited. After the performance we were all really proud of ourselves and were really happy with the performance we gave and here are some photos from the night.

Novel Study

Hi Guys!
For Term 4 we have started a Novel Study.

We are doing this to really focus on understanding what we are reading instead of just reading it and then not understanding what we just read or just not even remembering what we have just read.
Each group in reading has a different book depending on what level they are at in reading and what we are capable of reading.

My book for my group is (treasure island) Enemy At The Gate, By Philippa Werry.
When I first read the blurb of the book I thought that it looked very interesting and really made me want to read it. This is what the blurb is if you are interested.

"being in quarantine sounds like being in a prison" I said shivering. Lily nodded. " A bit like that. Except that the prison is your own home". "Or like being in a besieged castle" I said, thinking aloud. "with an invisible enemy at the gate".

Doesn't that just want to make you read more. And this is what the story is about

"It's December 1936 when the first polio cases are suspected. Soon a polio epidemic is sweeping the country. Schools are closed, swimming pools and movie theatres banned to children, and travel is restricted. Tom is the best runner in the school, but you can't outrun polio, and nobody knows when it will strike next. and twelve year old Tom is all caught up in the confusion".

So basically the story is a about a twelve year old boy named Tom and his family and their story. I really like this story because it is by a kiwi author and is based in NZ. I also like this because it really shows the raw truth of what life was like back in the day because in the story he talks about how his best friend Charlie and his family are quite poor and most of the time all they can afford for dinner is bread and dripping.

I would highly suggest this book to anyone and everyone because it is just so well written.

But before we could even start reading the book we had a few activities that we had to do first.

Firstly, we had to write all the facts that we already knew about the book by just looking at the front and back cover.

Secondly, we had to write about what we thought the book would be about just by the first look.

I hope you guys enjoyed here is the front cover.

Student Summit

Yesterday at Yaldhurst we had house reward time. House reward time is where in each house once you get to 300 hero cards  youthen get a reward it could be many different things like movie and popcorn or pool party or outside time or anything like that. My house is Rutherford. We got bring a toy but not many people remembered so we ended up playing with lego and playing board games.

I am the house leader so I go around and hang out with all the younger kids and make sure they are having fun at house rewards time. I think this is a great way to reward kids and give them a prize onec they earn hero cards.

Hero cards are little slips that we get given if we do something impressive or if our work is to a rally high standard. We also have hero certificates. So once you get to 20 hero cards you get a certificate and then for 40 60 80 hero cards you also get a certificate but one you get 100 you get a badge but i don't know what happens when you get to 200 because no one has ever gotten 200 hero cards.

Tomorrow we have a hero certificate assembly and  I hope that I get 100 because the last hero assembly I got a 80 hero card certificate so I think that I have made it to 100 (Hopefully).

Here are some photos from the hero reward time.

Post Test For Writing

This week we had our post test for our narrative writing block. We had to do a post test because recently we have been learning how to write a good narrative. Before we even started learning about narratives we had to write do a pre test.

As we went through the process of learning how to write a good narrative we were reading this book called the Ice Palace by Robert Swindells. The reason we read this book is because Robert Swindells has used amazing language and we wanted to learn to use a bit more about emotive language and using more description. (I highly suggest this book).

This book had great language and really amazing description. I think that this book was a great example of how a narrative should be written and a great example for us as a class to reflect off of.

In this process we started out by having to fill in the blanks from a part of the story and having to make it our own. After that we had to start writing our own paragraphs and turn the story into our own after we had written our own paragraph we then at the end of the session compared it to Robert Swindells writing as a class.

As I went through this process I found that there were alot of things that I still had to learn about writing a narrative story.
So today I finished my narrative and published it is and I want to share it with you guys here it is.

My Inquiry

For the past 3 weeks we have been working on a inquiry about rubbish.
We started this inquiry because we went on a class trip to the ecodrop or what some people would call the dump or the landfill.
We had to go through a long process (super long) before we actually got to start our inquiry.
Firstly we did lots of group work then we got to start a mini inquiry inside of our big inquiry.
each group got given a topic on what we had to research about i got plastic and this is a little biteable i made with some facts on it.

Friday, 7 September 2018

My Mini Inquiry

This week we got the tasks to do a mini inquiry on rubbish.
Each group had a type of rubbish that they had to research and learn about.
First we had to brainstorm things that we already new about the topic that you were given.
My topic was plastic.
Once we had brain brainstormed we had to find out some more information and then note take on what we had learnt.
I found a really cool video of a woman that only collected one jar of rubbish over four years.
She was able to do this by going to supermarkets where you are aloud to take your own containers and use those instead of buying packaged food that is covered in plastic.

She was also able to do this by composting and recycling lots of her stuff and not uing unnecessary things.
Here is the slide of what I did my work on.

My Speech

For the past four weeks we have been working on speeches and how to improve them.
In the first week we had to look at lots of different speeches and then evaluate them.
After we had evaluated a few speeches we had some tasks.

Next we had to look at a new speech that someone had written and improve it.
After that we were given time to write a practice speech and we had to choose from one of the topics that the teachers gave us.

Once we had done three speech practice we then started to make our actual speeches.

I decided to do my speech on how suicide can be prevented.

I decided to do this topic because i feel it is a really strong topic to talk about.

A Waste Of Time

On Wednesday we went to Eco sort. If you don't know what it is, it is a place where
recycling goes and gets separated into different piles to be then made into new things.
We went on the trip in two groups the first group in the morning, and then the second group after lunch. At the trip you learn all different things like how you can reuse, reduce and recycle and
use different stuff again and turn it into new things.

We had this leader called Chris we did lots of activities with him. He had a yellow wheelie top bin
which had all different types recycling in it. Then each of us had a card that had a different type
of recycling on it. I had mix grade paper but there were other ones like plastic number 2 which was
milk bottles and then other stuff like that. Then he dumped out the wheelie bin with all this clean
recycling in it, and then when he called out a certain type of recycling you had to run up and empty
as much as you could from the pile.

After we had done all of these activities we went to see the ecodrop, Which some people make all
the dump all the Landfill. After that we went to the Eco shop we were each give it a pretend $500
to buy stuff for Pretend flats if we were going out flatting.

We were each given a form that we had to fill out and write what stuff we would buy for our Flats.

When we got back to school we were put into groups to do an enquiry of how we think the trip went.
We had to do some activities, there were activities where we had to reflect on how we think the day went
at the eco trip and how much we enjoyed it. Then we had to do a reflection on how we think the
group went and work together as a group. We had to do  fill in a sheet which had columns and in the first
column is positives, the second column had minuses and the third column was Improvements.

So in the first column,n we put positives that were within the group and how we work together.
In the second column,n we put how we think the group didn't work very well together and what the
negatives were about the group, in the third column we put how we think we can improve this minuses
and make the group better.

Overall I think the group works quite well together and I also think that you could trip was really fun.

Here are some of the work that we did about the Eco trip and how I think the Eco trip went.
